Short answer: open your EOC (or Summary of Benefits) before you buy plane tickets

Medicare Advantage overseas benefits are plan-specific. Many plans limit foreign care to emergency or urgently needed services. Some offer little or nothing beyond what Original Medicare would do. Do not rely on a friend's plan, last year's memory, or a blog's sample dollar figure.

Your job before the trip is simple: pull the Evidence of Coverage (EOC) for the plan year you will travel, search the right terms, write down what you find, and call member services if anything is unclear. Then decide whether travel medical still fills the remaining gap.

GlobeHealth Insurance is an independent licensed insurance producer, not the carrier. For the broader Advantage travel picture (gaps and tips), see Traveling abroad with Medicare Advantage. For the citation hub, see Medicare Abroad.

What documents to pull (and where)

Start with the documents that govern your plan year, not a marketing flyer.

Medicare.gov publishes plan materials and comparison tools. Use them to locate your plan, then open your issuer's EOC. Official travel context: Medicare.gov travel outside the U.S.

Search terms and sections to look for

Chapter names vary by insurer. Teach yourself the method, not a fake universal page number. Open the PDF and use Ctrl+F (Windows) or Cmd+F (Mac) for:

Record what you find:

No universal dollar figure

Advantage worldwide emergency benefits (when they exist) differ by plan and year. A number you heard at a dinner table or saw on a blog is not your benefit. Copy the EOC section into a note for yourself, or ask member services to email the citation.

Questions to ask member services (script)

Call the number on your member ID card. Have the EOC open. Ask them to stay with you until you have answers in writing when possible.

  1. Does this plan pay for emergency care outside the United States?
  2. Is there a maximum benefit for worldwide or foreign emergency care? (Write down their answer and the EOC section they cite.)
  3. Does it cover medical evacuation or repatriation to the U.S.?
  4. Are outpatient follow-ups or prescriptions abroad covered after you are stabilized?
  5. Do I need prior authorization, or a specific process, to submit a claim from overseas?
  6. Can you email me the EOC section or note the chapter and page so I have it in writing?

What "emergency abroad" usually still leaves open

Even a helpful emergency benefit can leave large bills. Common gaps after you read the EOC:

That is when travel medical is designed to help: doctor and hospital bills abroad, assistance finding care, and often evacuation, subject to the plan certificate. For evacuation context, see medical evacuation basics.

Medical-only vs trip cancellation

Travel medical focuses on care abroad. Trip cancellation protects prepaid trip costs when you cannot go. Do not assume one product does both. Clear split: travel medical vs trip cancellation.

After you read the EOC: choose medical coverage for the trip

Match trip length and frequency to the right medical product type:

GeoBlue (now BCBS Global Solutions) medical lines many Advantage travelers compare include Voyager, Navigator, and Worldwide Premier. Those are medical-only products. Read the certificate for exclusions and pre-existing-condition rules before you buy.

Practical packing tip: keep your Advantage EOC notes, member card, and travel medical ID cards together. Save assistance phone numbers offline.

Bottom line

Your Medicare Advantage card is not a global passport for care. Reading the EOC (and confirming with member services) is the enrollee's job before international travel. Filling remaining overseas medical gaps is what travel medical is for.
